Poker Room Tips
There is a wealth of significant and specific differences between playing poker in an actual casino and playing it on the Internet or with a home game. When you sit down to play, you are agreeing to follow several procedures and special protocols. Understanding them completely is vital to playing. With that being said, here are some poker room tips.
For starters, you should never throw your chips into the pot when you are betting. That may be all right in the movies, but when you are playing, you should stack your bet neatly in front of you specifically, in front of your cards. Otherwise the dealer would not be correctly count your bet, and that would inevitably slow up the game.
In certain cases, you need to announce what you are going to do. For example, if you intend to raise, you say so when it is your turn to place your bet. Not only that, you should always include the amount of your raise along with your bet. By putting the bet in first and then reaching for the chips representing your raise, you run the risk of being call out on a string bet, and because those are not allowed, your raise will not be acknowledged.
Knowing what your hole cards are is one of the best poker room tips because, as stated, it is best not to slow the game down. Memorizing your cards will make you play more smoothly, and the other players will not be able to discern or tell if you are not glancing constantly at your cards.
As well, you have to protect your cards. That means not letting anyone else see them, naturally, but it also means making sure that no one elses cards get mixed in with your hand when the cards are thrown in at the end of the hand. This could cause the hand to be declared a dead one.
Still on the subject of cards, you should never discuss them during a live hand, either. If you mention the name of a card you threw out, example, someone who needs it may discover that it is not in play and start building a different hand, which could lead to an advantage.
One of the most important pieces of poker etiquette is never making a move if it is not your turn. This is unfair to yourself and the other players. No matter what you intend to do, you have to wait until it is your turn to do it.
You should never put down, berate, or lecture the other players either. Do not be a sore loser, a poor winner, or give your own tips during the game players need to get better by experiencing the game, not being told what to do and how to play.
Lastly, do not talk about bad beats you have experienced. Bad beat is the phrase describing what happens when you have a sure hand and someone else beats you out with a miracle draw. No one wants to hear these either, during the game, though everyone has them; they are just something that happens and cannot be changed.
