I always remember my dad saying that sport is important for the social aspect. He always encouraged me to play sport, even though I was not good at a sport, he said I should still play it for the enjoyment and for meeting people. Sure, there are the professionals who make a living out of it and are normally very competitive, so socializing is probably not the most important aspect to them. But for the vast majority of us, we play sport for fun and enjoy the social interaction.

Same goes with playing poker, you get to meet all kinds of interesting people from all over the world. Especially during online poker games, chat to some people find out where they are from and what life is like in their part of the world. I have made some great friendships online.

Of course we all like to win, but once you have finished the game shake hands, have the decency to congratulate the winner or be humble if you have won and emptied your competitor’s pockets!!!

Its really funny how life is! There I was bashing Transformers down in one of my previous posts and I get this guy writing to me, saying do you know that there is a poker player that also designed transformers?

Henry Orenstein, won a bracelet in the 1996 WSOP and has had many finishes in the money. He is probably one of the oldest poker players around, even into his eighties he is still going strong. After the Second World War he became a toymaker and managed convince the toy company Hasbro to produce Transformers…

Orenstein is the producer of the High Stakes Poker television show, which is probably what he is better known for in the poker world. Next time I should maybe be a litlle more careful about running things down, especially in public. You just never know what people have done with their lives and where they have been before.

What a load of cruck!

We already have machines playing a more active role in war and now many of them are unmaned flying machines and robots etc. And, I am sure that in the future whole battles will be faught by machines, guided by humans. But the transforming thing just goes too far for me.

Luck comes and goes…

You’ve heard it all before, but how true it is. So no matter how bad things are going or how bad your cards are, you have to hang in there, because it will turn. Psychologically it is very tough to hang in there, whilst everyone else is getting the cards or whilst you are trying to play with marginal hands… but you have to do it!

And, it can also go the over way, when you are riding a rich run of luck, use it to your full advantage because it wont last forever.

Patience is one of the toughest things to learn at the poker table. You cant push your luck, or force your luck too much… wait for it to come!

Ok I know video poker and poker are what you like, but its great fun trying out some new casino games and learning some new winning strategies in the casino. It opens the mind and allows you to apply some new thinking to the way you play casino games.

The other thing is that you should always keep an eye on what is happening out there, lets face it the online gambling and online casino industry is a very competitive place – they will do anything to attract customers, especially during these harder times.

Its worth searching for better bonuses and free games, because they out there, all you have to do is find them. Good luck.

I have just received my CardPlayer magazine in the post and have been glued to the poker magazine for the last 24 hours solid. Learning poker from the pros is the quickest way to improve your poker skills. What I really like about CardPlayer is that they have so many informative articles on how poker pros have played certain hands. So when you are faced with a decision to make, you can think, how would Daniel Negreanu have played this hand?…

One good thing is that it looks like the old boys in Congress might be getting closer to reversing the legislation. Barney Frank and Jim McDermot Inc…. say that online poker players could expect to see some changes in the near future… sounds like a safe politician’s statement… non-committal and just enough to get everyone’s hopes up… but staying positive lets hope there will be change to the legislation, enforced soon.

I guess what I like the most is the quality of the articles in CardPlayer. From the poker strategy through to all the listings of poker tournaments and how the players performed – its got it all. Most magazines I just flip thru, read a few lines here and there, look at the pictures… but not CardPlayer… just cant put it down.

We have this Jack Russell Terrier who is the craziest little guy. He has been spoilt a lot, so we have our hands full trying to control him. More than once he has sent the chips flying at a home game of poker!

Thing is that he is central to our lives and we have probably given him too much attention. If any of you have ever had a Terrier you will know all about how hyper active they are and what a handful they can be. At least he is small and not a big Labrador like Marley in “Marley and me“. Now that dog really is out of hand, humping the dog trainer, had me in tears…

We’ve been watching “The Dog Whisperer” on television, he is brilliant! He is so calm and in control, the dogs obey and understand him. In fact Cesar Millan is so good, that I bought his book “Cesar’s Way” and I haven’t put it down since the weekend. He even has his own website for those that are interested in learning more or getting one of his books.

I have tried some of the techniques, but you have to be patient and keep trying them. We have to do something to stop the cards and chips flying around during a poker game. Otherwise my mates are not going to come around anymore!

Well the good news is I finished my book, it was funny and sad at the same time, made me think of my parents getting old. Although there are some funny things that happen (won’t give them away) it also has a tragic element to the story.

Spent some time surfing the net for poker sites, poker articles and information on poker strategy.

The bad news is I had a disastrous poker night on friday. I shouldn’t really write about it, but I think it may be therapeutic if I just get it off my chest and get it out of my system, then maybe I can put it away and forget about it! The sooner the better!!

All was going well at the poker table, I was enjoying my evening and I should have quit at midnight. I would have finished off a couple of thousand dollars up and could have started my weekend on a high… but instead…

I kept going, I got a dose of poker greed and wanted to keep winning hands. I was really tired from the week and should have stopped. I started making mistakes which cost me, ended up three grand down… oh well I suppose I made a poker blunder, not knowing when to stop playing – quit while you are ahead the poker pros say!

As I lost more, I tried to prove that I could win and raised more than I should have – it became a vicious circle, until eventually I gave in and went home with my pride bruised and battered!!!

I started reading “A short history of tractors in Ukrainian” by Marina Lewycka this weekend… its quite a laugh, nice to read something light and entertaining for a change.

The book actually has nothing to do with Ukranian tractors at all! Talk about a misleading title…
Its about an 80 something year old guy that falls in love with and marries a 30 something year old Ukrainian woman and how his family deal with it… pretty funny because the daughters don’t take too well to the situation.

I reckon good for the old fella, if I was 80 odd (if I ever get that far…) years old I wouldn’t give a damn what people thought. Imagine… you know you only have a few years left in you, your wife passed away two years ago, your children are all independent adults with their own lives… what would you do?

I say go for it… if you can?
